Returning to Pune (and celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi)!

I’ll begin this post with a confession: I’ve been a terrible blog writer lately!

I’ve been back in Pune for over a month already and haven’t posted anything here. It’s been an eventful few weeks, so on the plus side I have plenty of material to write about. 🙂 I’ll start with an important festival here in Pune (and throughout Maharashtra state) that just concluded called “Ganesh Chaturthi.”

As the name suggests, this annual festival is held in honor of the Hindu god Ganesha (side note: Ganesh is my personal favorite). The festival lasts for 10 days with newly-built shrines and nearly-constant events occurring every neighborhood of the city.

The events in my neighborhood (called Koregaon Park) were held in several different streets, each beginning around dusk and going until around 11pm.

The events themselves are a mix of celebration and worship with pandals (temporary shrines) pulled down the street by farm tractors as crowds of people follow along on foot.

It’s hard to explain, but for folks in the U.S., think: parade + street dance + outdoor church service + tractor pull. 🙂

Typically I have work meetings via Zoom each weeknight with colleagues in the U.S. (when it’s morning there), but during the festival it was amusingly hard to concentrate with my apartment windows shaking from the loud music and beating drums right outside.

After the first couple of nights, I just made a habit of taking a break each evening once I heard the drumming begin to check out whatever was unfolding outside.

I’ve included a few videos below.

To those viewing, I wish for Ganesha to visit your home with bags full of happiness, prosperity, and peace!

Sounds of Ganesh Chaturthi at my street corner, night one

Night 2: Directly outside my apartment

Night 2: Meanwhile, just one street over . . .

Night 2: And one street over from that . . .

I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into Ganesh Chaturthi! Until next time!

Hi Colleen! What a celebration! What were they throwing from the tractor - something yellow! You are in the thick of another culture, which is, I'm quite sure, exactly what you want. Take care! Love you!

It seemed a bit chaotic, but I’m also guessing there was a method to the madness that I probably just didn’t understand as an outsider. :)

They were throwing flowers! I couldn’t see what kind but probably marigolds (which are often used in the flower necklaces and decorative hangings they make for auspicious occasions).

what a wonderful celebration! I love that it all happens in the evening--kind of like a Silver Bells on Steroids (with no snow and ice). I was worried I was missing your posts so I'm glad you are keeping busy. Have a wonderful time RP!

Good eye! Yes, yellow is considered an “auspicious” color and I’ve been told that it symbolizes sanctity and prosperity among other things. And since Hindu festivals use flowers as the primary decoration, you’ll see a lot of yellow (marigolds, etc) there, too. :)
