Since my previous post was on the lengthy side, this one will be in photo narrative style with images doing the bulk of the story telling.
For context, I’ll say this: I suspect that when people in the U.S. think of Bangalore, what probably comes to mind is a modern, sprawling city and hub of India’s call centers and IT firms. And of course, Bangalore is that. But when I visited, I wanted to explore the historic side of the city . . . things that existed before the city was given its colonial name of “Bangalore.”
There was far more to see than I had time for, but I hope you enjoy the brief visual journey through historic Bengaluru!
Krishnarajendra (KR) Market
Nearly a century old with goods that span several floors inside and overflow into the surrounding streets outside. It’s one of the largest flower markets in all of Asia, and it was so interesting to explore!
Bengaluru Fort
Reconstructed with stone (rather than mud) in the 18th century, it became an important military stronghold for Tipu Sultan (whose summer palace is shown below this).
Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace
It was a summer play land for a Sultan. Enough said.
Kote Venkataramana
A super interesting temple devoted to a powerful Hindu god. I loved exploring these brilliant architectural details!
